Stormwater Management Program Plan
The City of Auburn is regulated under a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) municipal stormwater permit issued by the Washington State Department of Ecology. The permit outlines requirements for managing stormwater to prevent pollution and is issued to the city every five years.
One of the key components of the permit is the development and regular updating of a Stormwater Management Program (SWMP) Plan by the city. The SWMP Plan details various actions and initiatives aimed at reducing the discharge of pollutants from the storm drainage system.
The SWMP Plan covers a range of measures including stormwater planning, public education and outreach, involvement of the community, mapping and documentation of storm drainage systems, detection and elimination of illicit discharges, controlling runoff from new developments, operations and maintenance, and implementing source control program for existing developments. The permit outlines specific actions and methods that the city must follow through the SWMP.
The SWMP is an active document that evolves over time to comply with changes in NPDES requirements and the city's implementation progress. Formal updates to the SWMP Plan are required to be made annually and submitted to the Department of Ecology.
How can you help? The city encourages input from the public to improve the SWMP Plan, with comments being considered for the following year's updates. This means you can submit comments any time throughout the year and we certainly value the input that we receive.
