Redefining Luxury - The Black Experience of Sustainable Textile Practices

Lecture followed by Q&A

Luxury is more than exclusivity—it’s tradition, craftsmanship, and sustainability. This immersive workshop explores the deep-rooted sustainable fashion practices within the Black experience, tracing their origins from Africa to Black American fashion today.

This presentation will touch on sewing techniques and the empowerment of sewing machines, embroidery, weaving, and royal garments, and Kente cloth weaving. Visitors are invited to touch an authentic piece of Kente cloth handwoven by a Ghanaian master and the first 25 visitors will receive a piece inspired by this tradition to take home.

This event is family friendly. Funded by the Postmark Programming Grant and 4 Culture King County.
